La Policlínica Ntra. Sra.del rosario supera con éxito uno de sus mayores retos

A technical challenge for the Neurosurgery Unit of Policlínica Ntra. Sra. del Rosario.

We are very proud of the great work of our partner Policlínica Ntra. Sra. del Rosario for their admirable work with Mathías, a 13 year old boy, who had an intramedullary cervical tumour removed. 

After several surgeries in Peru failed to remove the tumour, the boy was treated with chemotherapy and radiotherapy and was classified as inoperable, moving on to palliative care. Fortunately the case arrived at the Policlínica Ntra. Sra. del Rosario, where he was successfully operated on.

His mother never gave up hope and did everything possible to get help and find a neurosurgeon willing to take on this complicated surgery.

After contacting several media in Peru, his case reached the hands of one of the neurosurgeons at the Polyclinic, Dr. Xavier Santander, of Peruvian origin, who decided to contact the boy's mother to tell her about his diagnosis.

After a thorough assessment of Mathias' file, the Neurosurgery Unit of the Polyclinic decided to intervene. On 2 July, surgery was performed at the Polyclinic: 6 hours of surgery and 8 hours of anaesthesia. 

After the surgery, a control MRI scan was carried out and there was nothing left of the tumour: the surgery had been a success.

Mathías is now in the hands of the Physiotherapy and Endocrinology teams of the Policlínica Group to recover his strength.
